How to help a senior with depression?

According to America’s Health Rankings studies from the United Health Foundation, approximately 15 percent of people ages 65 and older are diagnosed with depression. The onset of depression in seniors can be difficult to identify. This might be due to seniors assuming that feeling sad and depressed is part of growing older, partly due to all the changes they might be going through, like a change of environment, limited mobility, and other aspects. Depression is a prevalent condition and needs to be treated before it becomes part of their daily life, going undiagnosed.

What does depression look like in a senior?

Isolation can be a clue to know when a senior is feeling depressed. This happens when they feel like they don't longer have meaning or purpose in life, and therefore causes a lack of social engagement on a regular basis. Other signs are lack of appetite and feeling less energized.

What to do to help a senior with depression?

Develop a relationship where they open up and can communicate. Create a safe and comfortable environment to have any type of conversation, including feeling depressed, since it might be a taboo topic for older generations. The question “Do you feel depressed” is preferred to be avoided. Below we made a list of questions you can ask your loved one.

  • Are there any activities you have wanted to start doing lately?
  • Do you enjoy spending time with others?
  • Are you craving any foods?
  • Is there anything you need help with?
  • What can I do for you?
  • Is there any activity you would like to do?
  • What is on your mind today?

Show your loved ones that you want to help them live healthily and feel happy, that their physical and mental health are always important to you. Look for activities you can both do together and encourage them to seek appropriate care if felt needed.
