When it comes to keeping the brain healthy and working, good sleeping is key. But why is it so important to get good rest? Sleep deprivation is associated with memory loss, Alzheimer and mental problems. Although, sleeping too much have also negative effects on our health, including struggles with remembering instructions, paying attention, and other mental processes. Both extremes are bad because they relate to multiple negative conditions. It is important to have a healthy sleeping routine, and according to specialists, the adequate sleeping hours per night are seven to eight hours.
How to get a good night's sleep?
There is no magic formula for getting better sleep, but there are some actions we take to have the best conditions to get a good night’s rest. Some of the steps we mention below are associated with better overall sleep, especially if you are struggling, these recommendations can help you.
Have a consistent sleep-wake routine: Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. These will give your body the right signals for its natural clock. The consistency will help you wake up and fall asleep easily.
Watch your caffeine intake: we all love coffee but we have to be careful about how much we drink every day. Some studies recommend avoiding caffeine within six hours before going to sleep, even if you think coffee doesn't have any effect on you.
Exercise regularly: short walks and stretching are helpful not just for your health but also for getting better sleep. This is because workouts send signals to our bodies, like the increase of heart rate, the release of hormones, and change in body temperature.
Avoid bright lights: the brightness of our TVs, smartphone, and computers send signals to our brains, making it believe is daylight, and so, blocking the production of melatonin, this is a substance that tells your brain to go to sleep.
Perform an activity to get you tired: if you are having trouble falling asleep for 20 minutes or longer, get out of bed, stretch, read a book, or drink noncaffeinated tea.
Don’t linger in bed in the morning: Creating a good habit is important, and staying in bed after hitting snooze isn’t good, even if you didn’t get good sleep the night before.
